MP016 Vintage Matilde Poulat Matl sterling silver,
coral, turquoise, amethyst pendant; circa-1950 to 1960 (eagle
129) Beaded Maltese cross with central amethyst cabochon flanked by coral cabs and turquoise inlays. Poulat’s work incorporates spiritual themes with Pre-Columbian visual tradition. She was greatly influenced by the ancient Mixtec jewelry found in Tomb 7 at Monte Alban: dazzling works in precious metal embellished with bright feathers and stones, intricate beading and wire work spirals. Such artistic inspiration appears to advantage in this cross pendant. Long venerated in Catholic Mexico, the maltese cross was also an important symbol from the Codex Madrid of the Yucatec Maya. Exquisitely displayed on a vintage chain, this cross with its exuberant colors and lavish inlay connects its wearer to spiritual and creative traditions, both ancient and modern. |
